Released 24/12/07 Redeveloped Hobart Airport Officially LaunchedMedia Release 10/09/07The official launch of Hobart Airport’s redeveloped terminal was an important milestone for the company and its Board, Chairman Peter Morgan said. “Today’s Hobart Airport is a modern, world-class facility of which all Tasmanians can be proud, and it is also Tasmania’s only airport with 100 per cent screening of checked in baggage following the installation of checked bag security screening as required by the Federal Government,” he said. “The airport’s Board has overseen the investment of $23 million in new passenger facilities over the past three years. “As a result, the facility, officially launched today by Premier Paul Lennon, is more than ready to cope with expected increases in worldwide air passenger traffic. “It is worth noting that since work started on the redevelopment approximately three years ago, passenger volumes through the airport have increased by more than 33 per cent.” Mr Morgan said from the outset the company’s goal was to ensure Hobart Airport had the necessary facilities to efficiently handle expected passenger traffic increases. “We have been very successful in this area because of careful medium and long-term planning,” he said. Mr Morgan said the airport’s non-aeronautical property development work was an example of this forward planning. “Within the next two to three years we can expect to see significant development activities in this sector of our business,” he said. “This includes the proposed DFO outlet, hotel/motel, fuel retail and child care centre facilities. “We are confident that the new owner, whoever that may be, will be acquiring an airport well able to meet modern needs, particularly in the area of passenger comfort and security.” Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said the airport had enjoyed a number of years of solid business growth, with increased turnover, containment of costs and record passenger numbers. “Because of the unexpected growth in passenger numbers due to the arrival of Virgin Blue and Jetstar, it was necessary to bring forward the redevelopment works to ensure passenger comfort,” he said. “While there was some minor disruption to airport customers and passengers given the size of the task undertaken, the result is a brand new and modern facility that has been well received by the people who use it. “Everyone involved in this major project is to be congratulated on the task – which was a difficult one given the need for the airport to continue operating during a time of unprecedented growth. The central check in hall for all three airlines and a baggage hall have been built between the international and domestic terminals, joining the two terminals together. The comprehensive checked bag screening system worth $3 million is currently being installed and the check-in-hall finishes are well underway. When the upgrade is completed, Hobart Airport will become the only airport in the state able to ensure that 100% of all passenger luggage is x-rayed before loading on to an aircraft, as required by the Federal Government. “Other benefits of the upgrade include an arrivals baggage carousel for Virgin Blue passengers and food and beverage outlets outside security screening in the terminal. Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (HIAPL) Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said this phase of the upgrade would provide the travelling public with checked bag screening facilities, a central check-in point for all three airlines, an arrivals baggage carousel for Virgin Blue passengers and food and beverage outlets outside security screening in the terminal. “The domestic and international terminal buildings will also be connected following the completion of preliminary work to enable the integration of the two terminals,” he said. “The northern side of the domestic terminal has been vacated by relocating Virgin Airline’s check in and arrivals to the international terminal and Virgin Freight to the temporary facility north of the international terminal. “Jetstar Airways check in has been moved within the international terminal, vacating the southern side of the building. “In the coming days a fence will be erected around the building site and a footpath constructed for Jetstar and Virgin departing passengers, with signage guiding them to the departure gates located in the domestic terminal. “New taxi rank arrangements will accompany these pedestrian changes.” Mr Tucker said Hobart Airport staff and the contractors would endeavour to minimise inconvenience to passengers. “When the upgrade is completed next year, Hobart Airport will feature the most comprehensive security screening of any airport in the State and will offer modern facilities appropriate for a capital city airport,” he said. We greatly appreciate your understanding. Hobart Airport RedevelopmentMedia Release 29/07/06Further major redevelopment and terminal expansion works at Hobart Airport to ensure passenger safety and to ensure facilities are at a standard appropriate for a capital city airport are set to commence in early September. Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said while some preliminary construction works had commenced, tenders for the major construction work, worth more than $15 million, would be advertised in early August. “The redevelopment work will provide facilities for checked bag security screening required by the Federal Government to ensure check-in luggage is x-rayed before loading on to an aircraft,” he said. “This element of the works needs to be completed by July 2007.” Mr Tucker said the works also involved situating the three airline check-in counters in a central area. “The checked bag security screening area will be situated between the international and domestic terminals which will be combined,” he said. “Other enhancements include new high strength aircraft parking bays and new fuel spill drainage arrangements. “New food and beverage facilities before security screening are also planned, as are administration facilities.” Mr Tucker said while the security upgrade was obviously important and the key component of the work being undertaken, developing the facilities to a level that was appropriate for a capital city airport was also important. Minister for Tourism Paula Wriedt said with the number of visitors passing through Hobart Airport up by 11 per cent to 425,738 (one way) in the 12 months to March this year, the continuing redevelopment of the Hobart Airport could not be more timely. “Sometimes, this airport feels like my second home,” she said. “So it’s great to see it evolving into a modern facility that meets the needs of travellers in the 21st century – both Tasmanians and visitors. “Now that we have been voted Number 1 Island in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific by readers of North America’s top selling Travel and Leisure magazine, we have an even greater international reputation to uphold.” Ms Wriedt said last impressions counted almost as much as first impressions. “And this second stage of construction work will make departures a better experience for everyone,” she said. Mr Tucker said he expected the redevelopment and expansion works to be completed by the end of 2007. “Airport users would notice some disruption while the construction works were underway,” he said. “These will be minimised as much as possible with updates available on both the Hobart Airport web site (www.hobartairpt.com.au) and Tourism Tasmania web site (www.tourismtasmania.com.au).” Released by: Nicolas Turner Tel: 6270 2250 or 0418 538 865 To download images of the proposed terminal upgrade, click here

Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd Chief Executive Wayne Tucker said there would be no immediate impact on airport users. “The work which commenced today will provide facilities for checked bag security screening required by the Federal Government to ensure check-in luggage is x-rayed before loading on to an aircraft,” he said. “This work will also involve combining the international and domestic terminals and situating the three airline check-in counters in a central area.” “The estimated cost for the works is well in excess of $15 million.”
